Marketplace is offline and content region lock [UPDATED]

I’ve been using Xbox360 a lot, especially the demos and the videos. I enjoy the moments that I can view trailers and try out so many games.

Recently XboxLive offered a web based Marketplace. You don’t have to turn on your Xbox to purchase or download your 360 content, now you can queue them from your favorite browser. I like the idea, I enjoyed the idea so much that I immediately logged on to the store to try it out. As soon as I try it, I was surprised to see that there was so much content. More than what I usually see when I use my 360. I try to download a free video called “The Guild”, suddenly, I was greeted with this message “This offer is not valid in your region”. I presumed as much, but it feels like it’s not fair to show these items to me and not let me get it. What’s this supposed to mean? Like Live teasing me? Telling me that living in the Philippines is not worthy to see free video? I mean, if the marketplace don’t intend to give it to me, then don’t let me see it anymore. I understand region locks, they are there for a reason, but don’t tease me. It’s irritating once you feel like you can get it, then you suddenly notice that you can’t. The Xbox Live Marketplace needs a lot of work, other than the region lock, they should really do previews of the Premium themes. I just hope Microsoft improves their service.

About the Marketplace again… for some reason, I can’t get in. What’s irritating is that once it has this problem, logging in your profile takes very long, to the point I thought my Xbox hangged up. I actually had no problems that Microsoft is working on it, but if you are online it’s a requirement to log into Live, and with the Marketplace down it takes like less than a minute for it to respond. Even when I’m already logged in, there are times that the NXE takes a little longer to load properly. I haven’t tried logging in today, but yesterday was a pain. It’s not an intense pain since I was still able to talk to my XboxLive friends through it’s chat system without a problem. Again, I just hope that Microsoft improves their service.

UPDATE: Looks like the problem with my connection is related to my internet connection. I had to change my DNS and suddenly, everything worked fine again.

Playstation Home Beta Invite! Why just now?

I had my fill of playing the PS3 for a while, since I just borrowed one before. Today, I just received an invitation to join Home Beta, now that I don’t have a PS3. I don’t know if a lot of people have received this, but if not, this is an opportunity that I will miss sadly. I know Home is just like a social MMO with tons of advertising, but I’m a video gamer, I like those small little things that make a console unique. I enjoyed playing around with the NXE (New Xbox Experience), but having this rare chance to play the beta version of Sony’s new interface is something I’m also wanting to try since it was announced the first time, especially it’s home and character customization.

Fable 2 Xbox360 Review

For the first time, I already have my own Xbox360, after 3 years of it’s release, and yes it is a Falcon. The first game I got to play out on my first 360? Fable 2. After playing Megaman 9 and for some reason, I can’t get myself to play Okami, I really missed playing some real hardcore games. Ah, now, I’m done with my rambling. Is Fable 2 really a better RPG than most? The original game was already aspiring to be more than any RPG has ever achieved, how will the new one fare up? They promised us that we can buy shops, a nice sweet dog, a great quest and much better gameplay. Does it live up to its name?

I’ll start off with this, the game loads a lot. So much that it gets irritating at times. I wonder if putting this on a PS3 would work much better? If there was a way to get this on my hard drive I’d do it now, why can’t the NXE (New Xbox Experience) come much sooner? Well, since that’s out of the way, lets continue.

The visual quality reminds of the original Fable, everything is like it came from a storybook. The art style is the same, but in every angle it looks quite detailed than before. The game is smooth enough, but there are some instances that animation is compromised just to keep the game to hog itself down. Like some characters are smooth in movement, but power ups slow down to a crawl, but since they are not what we look at most of the time it doesn’t bother you in gameplay. But it does bother me that I thought that the game was slowing down. Nonetheless, the game looked amazing. The locations are bigger before loading another map, the world seems more alive than the original game.

The voice acting was a good as before, I had no problems about it. It’s enough to pull you in and enjoy the game. I doubt that anyone would have any quarrels with this one. The music is good, but I do miss the Danny Elfman (Batman 1989, Tales from the Crypt, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas) intro from the first game, and they removed an intro all together.

The game grows on you, literally. The game starts off slow, since you don’t have much action to get into, and you are a small orphan child. Here you get to understand a lot of the controls, well, the basic ones at least. At the same time you get to feel how the world is, although it doesn’t much tell you what the timeline is especially if you’ve played the previous Fable. The controls are simple to understand, all your abilities are just a click away, which is action, spell and range attacks. Each time you hit an opponent, you can get experience points, if you absorb them, which you must not forget to do.

Experience points are divided the same way your skills are. So if you use range attacks more, the more experience you get using range attacks. Although you do get a generic experience which you can add up to your total. Experience is gained like money, you can spend it on skills if you can afford it. A skill will cost at lot, but if you need like a toughness skill, you can buy it by adding your action experience and your generic experience. It makes more sense in leveling up skills than your character levels up. This is one RPG that your character never levels up, only your skills. It’s your option to level up your life or level up other stuff. Focusing on one skill can make you strong in one aspect, but it hinders you to try others, but if you spread too much, you hinder your chance to make your skills powerful.

Another thing I liked about this is getting jobs, although they are still boring than actually playing, its the end result that makes it worth while. Getting jobs can get you money, obviously, and you can get more weapons, armor and such. Other than that, you can get establishments, buildings, shops, houses and more. The more establishments you own, the more money you get each virtual day. You can even change the prices of the items on sale, rent out a house, own it for your spouse, decor it to your hearts content. There will be a point that you won’t even need to take a job anymore since you gain so much money just by owning everything.

The dog is a nice addition. At first it doesn’t really feel like he’s any important, but as soon as he gets to know how to find hidden items, he turns invaluable. You won’t want to loose your pet since you need him to find treasures. After a while, you realize that the more you take care of your pet, the more people will like you. The dog slowly grows on you and it’s nice, but once you loose your pet, you worry. Be careful with your pet, since it can get hurt during a fight.

Another wonderful thing about this game is that it helps you get to your objective. This is not like most games that you have to find your own way like Oblivion, although that does point you where to go, this one makes a line to how to get there from where you are now. The map is almost useless though, but the line helps more than any. Choose a quest, and the line will just show up it makes questing so much easier and more accessible to anyone. Maybe some hardcore gamers will want to disable it since it makes it so easy but then again, I welcome it because it just makes my gaming more fun than frustrating.

The online feature is like a SEMI-MMORPG, since you can talk through your microphone with anyone close to you. Other players are not actually close to you since they are all playing their own game, they all show up as orbs with their gamertag icon. But each and everyone can join you and you can join them. It’s an idea that I really like since, talking to everyone can get you more friends with the same goals, helping each other out to finish the game.

There are so many things about this game that are good. I just feel bad there are also negatives about this game. I wish there were more missions which involve other heroes. Most of the time they leave you alone to do your quests. As I said before, the loading time is ridiculous, the map is almost useless. The ending could have been better, since it doesn’t even have a boss fight. Focusing on the main quests can finish the game really quick and it can get disappointing. Although you can still do all the quests you have missed, and you can get a few new ones after the ending, it won’t feel the same trying to do them. It makes more sense to do the game all over again, since I felt like I wanted to try other endings for achievement points.

At the end, even though I had a few problems, the good still outweigh the bad. It’s a game I actually enjoyed, but ended way too early. It had more ideas than most RPG games even Oblivion didn’t tackle buying properties the same way this has. I Highly Recommend trying out this game. Some of you may even buy it, and for a while, it is worth it.

This game is now available at Gamehopper, you can TRY or BUY the game. Php599 for a monthly fee to receive 1 game at a time (play the game as long as you like and exchange it at any time for no additional fees), nationwide deliveries (Philippines only).

Installed NXE without a problem. Whoohoo!

I also installed the New Xbox Experience. I was actually worried because downloading system firmwares are dangerous if it’s cut off in the middle of some kind of power failure. Living in Paranaque, Philippines doesn’t make you feel any safe from that. But then again, I can’t miss out on this since the new menu system has been hyped to the full extent, and a lot of my friends has loaded up the NXE as soon as it got up on November 19th.

The system update took 30+ minutes for me. I didn’t actually time it, but it’s around that time. There were 2 download updates. It went smoothly and there were no problems. Except that I almost thought my system broke because it hangged up right after my initial installation of the NXE. Good thing it didn’t.

The new menu is wonderful, I can’t believe that the system can totally make itself fresh and new. The first thing that pops out is the introduction of the new Avatar for your profile. The system reminds me of Mii, and it’s fun to play around. There are so much things to play around with your avatars looks. I just wish that there were more customizable options like changing the position of the freckles or changing the color of your plain clothes. But obviously, Xbox Live will charge for any new clothes in the future, since they charge for pretty much anything, like really small images that are used on their profile and themes too.

The menu system is not really revolutionary, since it does remind me a bit of Playstation’s Xross Media Bar, but NXE’s more refined and more visually stunning. The look itself is not the only change, there are other improvements too, like games can now be installed to the hard drive. Some games work wonderfully nice, since the system is more quiet without the disk drive spinning. Some games even load faster now once you install them. You still need the disk for it to boot up the game. The only problem now, is that 20Gb won’t cut it anymore.

There are also issues of banning. Everyone who has modded their Xbox360 units, even with stealth mode will have problems if they are online. Too bad that they will be missing out a lot of the good stuff that Live has to offer.

Anyway, I really enjoy the new menu, and for what’s its worth, It gives the 360 owners something fresh and feels like a new console all together.

I officially have an Xbox360

After borrowing 360’s and trying to save up for a good future, I finally got my own Xbox, after 3 years after it’s initial launch. I got it about 3 weeks ago, but I was so busy at work that I couldn’t post as much as I wanted. I got the arcade version which is essentially the just the Xbox without the hard drive. What’s the difference? The package is not totally different from any version except that it doesn’t have a hard drive, but it does include a memory card, but no headset.

Good thing a friend gave me an old 360 20Gb hard drive and lent me his headset. So, I’m in full gaming mode with the 360. Lots of catching up to do, playing games that I missed out. Good thing that Gamehopper service is such a wonderful experience for me since I can try out a lot of games without spending thousands of pesos. I still pay for the service even though I do work for them, and I think that’s fair enough.

Anyway, I’m enjoying my 360 to it’s fullest. Read up on the next article about NXE. BTW, I’m enjoying Left4Dead demo. I’ll try to get a copy soon.

What’s with the new Nintendo DSi

The new Nintendo DSi is out in Japan. I have no doubt that it will come out here in the Philippines very soon. It has new features that will gain some attention, like the camera and the SD card slot. But what do I think of it?

I like the idea of the new DSi, but I have mixed feelings about it. Nintendo has been doing this to us for quite some time now, making better versions of their current popular handheld console. Although previous hand helds only made the system better, not a total remake and adding new features. This is why I have mixed feelings about this system.

I like the camera feature, it makes a better Pictochat, especially that you can play around with images and faces of what you capture on your DSi. With the camera, I like the idea that it can play music too, although so far from what I heard it can’t play MP3’s but AACs. With the camera and music capability, obviously this will take a lot of space, so the SD card is another nice added piece to it. The online DS shop is a good thing, it makes it just as accessible as the Wii Shop Channel, downloading demos and games will not be erased anymore since they can be saved on the SD card.

Okay, now about my problems about this DSi. One thing, battery life is going to be a problem, its not going to be as reliable as the original DS especially with all the new features packed in. The AAC music format is not a standard, but at least there are file converters out there, but it still is a hassle. The Gameboy Advance slot is totally gone. So, if you want to keep playing GBA games, you have to get a DS, DS Lite or a GBA. Another problem with this is the Region locking of the new DSi games. This is going to be the first on all handheld consoles, from what I remember. Gameboy games, DS and PSP games had no restrictions whatsoever.

This is a double edged sword though, I like the idea of the system making pirated software useless, but it will kill off a lot of homebrew development. Flash cards won’t work on this one this time around. So far a lot of people have tried R4’s and M3 Real cards and none of them work. Although, it may just be a matter of time until someone works it out.

Without new software to justify a DSi, I don’t see why I need to buy it. The added camera, music player and the SD slot is nice. Heck, my phone already does those things, so what’s the point adding more music players and a camera?

This system will need to wait until games do come out that takes advantage of the camera. I know Nintendo will come up with one, no doubt about it, but they should have released a camera enabled game together with the DSi. At least it should justify the purchase.

To everyone else, it’s your call to buy one, remember, the new DSi games will be region locked and its only released in Japan. The US is still waiting another year before releasing it, so no english games for the DSi until next year.

Follow up on Level Up! Live on the final day.

Second day at Level Up! Live, still at World Trade Center. I came a bit late though, around 5PM. The Playground booth was now focused on PinoyPS with their PS3 and Monster Hunter Philippines with PSP multiplayer galore.  I was also able to attend the World Cyber Games Soul Calibur 4 competition at SM Mall of Asia.

It was interested to see a group of gamers who play Monster Hunter 2G at the PlayGround booth. Its not a personal favorite of mine, but the graphics do look nice, but its just not my type of game. Maybe I need to try 2G next time around. I could just wait for Monster Hunter 3 for the Wii. I wonder how that will play.

I wasn’t able to play any game this time around. I was there mostly to observe and see how everything is going, was able to talk to people with PlayGround and PinoyPS though. I still miss playing Little Big Planet.

Well, Level Up! Live is still a blast and there were still tons of people. Mostly I saw the people from CosPlay communities. So more costumes this time around and a lot of picture taking… no I didn’t have my camera with me, so no pictures at the moment.

Too bad the Philippine team didn’t win, but they at least reached 4rth place, out of 11 teams all over the world. I hope there is a next time.

Event ended a bit early though. It was expected to end at 10PM, we saw that people were already packing up at 8:30pm. Overall, the event went great. Wonderful placement of the booths, very good crowd control and 2 days with packed activities. I have no problems with this event. It was fun and very well organized.

Kudos to Level Up!

World Cyber Games’ Soul Calibur 4 Competition

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to attend the start of the event. This was held in SM Mall of Asia, EOne Center I think is the name of the place. I might be wrong. Its not really a big event, it pales in comparison to Level Up Live. Anyway, we are trying not to compare… try…

Anyway, this is just a small event, basically just focused on competition on Guitar Hero 3 and Soul Calibur. I really can’t say much about Guitar Hero competition since it seems there were so much technical problems, that the event took WAY too long than expected.

Since they were only using one HD Television set, Soul Calibur 4 gamers had to wait until Guitar Hero 3 competition finished. The GH tournament was hard for everyone not because the game was hard, but it took so slow, even for the Soul Calibur competitors.

But when Soul Calibur started, it was fun and everyone had a blast. Although it was a bit late than anyone expected. There were many SC4 players. It was good that they used an arcade controller since i doubt that many would have used an Xbox360 gamepad.

If only it was announced earlier, maybe a lot of people would have joined in. If only they had backups of possible problems, it wouldn’t have taken too long.

I do hope that they plan the next event much better than this. We all are looking forward to a good video gaming console competition.

Down Yesterday

Last Monday, I had no problems using my computer, it was fine and working perfectly. Suddenly, on Tuesday morning, my PC won’t work properly for any reason. The hard drive is loading non stop to the point that its so unresponsive. Even the start up loading screen gets very slow and takes several minutes before it does anything. Even the safe mode won’t respond.

I felt like I had no choice. I had to format the computer. Its good that I’ve saved most of my work on an external hard drive or I would have bursted.

Well, the computer is formatted, it loads fast, but I had to reinstall everything and it took me an entire day to get it running.

Other than the computer was down…

The car was flat. I was able to get help from my neighbor to help me bring the wheel to the nearest vulcanizing shop to get it fixed.
